Merton Park Sports

Football Festival

Today the year 3 and 4 football team competed in a festival at Raynes Park high.

There were eight players in our team: Riley, George, Lana, Edward, Finlay, Isabella, Charlie and Harrison and each one played so well.

We won our first game 6 – 0 against Poplar A team, we then lost to St John Fisher (1-0) and drew with West Wimbledon (0-0) and with Hillcross (1-1).

All of the goals from Merton Park were really strong. One player even got  hat-trick and another hit the bar twice. We had a really strong defense, supportive players and real team spirit. We also had some great, supportive parents to cheer us on and we had a great day.

The Whole School Sports Day!

On the 30th of June, the whole school had a Sports Day. KS1 had some competitive races which were split into classes of boys and girls. As well as KS1, KS2 played some fun games and events which included Tug of War, Egg & Spoon, Hockey and many more.

Some of the Year 6 children helped out with the classes to contribute and support their house teams. There were also some Sports Leaders from Year 5 who led the events and supported as well. For our lunchtime, we had a picnic at the field which all of us found relaxing. This gave us a chance to play some cricket with our sports teacher, Mr.Collins. Although it was very hot and tiring, the whole school enjoyed this wonderful and fun day of the year.

Merton Park is really proud of its fabulous dancers, who were chosen as one of the groups to represent London in the finals in Birmingham!

The children danced to “River” by Emeli Sande, with lovely choreography by Miss Parsons. We were all really proud of the children’s performance and everyone had a super day!

You can watch the children’s dance in the video below. We hope you enjoy it as much as we all did.

Inspire your friends!

After watching the London Marathon on TV this morning I have been inspired to go for a run this evening, maybe not as far as 26 miles though!

Lindsey from Blue Peter has taken on the 26.2 miles this year as she is promoting the Blue Peter Sports Badge! She did a quick interview half way through her run and said to check out the website to find out more, so I have!  To be awarded a badge you need to inspire a friend to join you in your sport.

Check out the link below to see if you could be awarded a badge, I would love to hear some of your stories of inspiring a friend to join you in your sport.

Challenge run take 2! Year 3 & 4

I was very lucky to have the privilege of taking the year 3 & 4 challenge run team to Raynes Park playing fields this week! It was a very busy event with 30 schools taking part.  28 children represented our school and they all did a super job!

All the children finished the race after battling through the busy start line! We had two children fall over during the race but they picked themselves up and continued to the end!

Well done Year 3 & 4s, I hope to see you at next years event too!!

28 children from year 5 & 6 competed at the Merton School Sports Partnership challenge run yesterday and did really well! Mrs Mikkelsen commented at how fantastic they did and just how difficult the start of the race was with around 100 children starting at the same time as one another!

All chidlren should be pleased with themselves especially as it sounded like a very busy event! Well done to Lara in year 5 as she left the competition with a certificate for coming 9th place in her race!

fantastic results for Merton Park especially as 700 children took part at this one event!

Any tips for our year 3 & 4 children going to the event next week?

Gymnastic success!

Our gymnastic teams competed in the Merton School Partnership competition in February and did our school very proud.  I was lucky enough to watch the teams before they went off to the competition and the enthusiasm and smiles from the children were great to see. Year 5 & 6 came 4th in their competition and year 3 &4 came 3rd, which meant they returned to school with medals!

I am sure you inspired lots of children in our school to work hard in gymnastics and push themselves that little bit further. Well done again to all of you!

Our dance team have made the nationals!

The dancers performed at New Wimbledon Theatre on Monday afternoon and came 3rd place out of 24 schools! I have heard lots from the teachers and parents at just how amazing the dance was performed but I would love to hear from the dancers themselves to know how it felt to perform in front of such a large audience.

Did anyone watch them rehearse, what did you think about the dance?

Well done to the dance team!
